Phi Delta Epsilon (PhiDE) is an International Medical Fraternity whose mission is to create physicians of integrity. I joined Nevada Alpha’s Beta Class in Fall 2013 during my sophomore year of college and have been a passionate member and leader ever since. This organization continues to help me grow professionally as well as personally, and I wanted to dedicate a page on my blog to PhiDE to honor what a large impact it’s had on my life thus far.
When I first joined during college, its local and international leaders acted as an instant “family” in addition to being the foundation for my professional network. Members were instantly willing to share any and all advice they had, there was no room for being overly competitive. The chapter leaders did an excellent job providing members with useful information about the medical school application process. When I became a chapter leader myself, I learned countless valuable lessons in leadership and communication that I still carry with me. The positive environment PhiDE provided laid the foundation for the professional I aspire to be. I’ve always strived to help those following my path towards medicine, and PhiDE has provided a perfect avenue to do so.
Once I was accepted to medical school, I knew I wanted to share this outstanding organization with my classmates. I was so lucky to have almost half of the charter class at my brand new school join as the founding class for our new chapter, Epsilon Nu. The values of my school and of PhiDE work extremely well together, and I’m so proud to still be part of the PhiDE Family. When I started this blog in 2019, I was the International Premedical Student Representative on the Board. That position inspired me to put an idea into action by starting this blog. Now in 2022, I am excited to be selected as the next Resident/Fellow Representative on the International Board.
I can’t talk about PhiDE without also mentioning the personal connections. To this day, the friendships I made through PhiDE are some of my most treasured and continue to help me through this journey. Words can’t express how highly I value the relationships I’ve formed thanks to PhiDE, and I believe that initially connecting with the commonality of aspiring to be physicians helped our friendships grow.
If you’re a premedical or medical student and you’re looking for guidance, I’d highly recommend looking into your local PhiDE chapter. The journey to becoming a doctor is long, and a journey I’m still figuring out myself. But I think that having inspiring and positive people to share the journey with helps us enjoy each step along the way and not get too caught up focusing only on the end goal.
